Journal of the American College of Cardiology published this paper in the April 2010 edition. This study tested 68 women and found that digital fingertip (EndoPAT) endothelial function was significantly impaired in post-menopausal women with non-obstructive coronary artery disease. That means women without significant chest pain who have coronary heart disease can be identified, because the non-invasive EndoPAT test predicted the presence of Ischemic Heart Disease. Endothelial dysfunction, which is treatable and reversible, leads to coronary artery disease and stroke. Since coronary artery disease is the leading cause of mortality in post-menopausal women, it makes sense that every woman who is over 45 should ask their doctor for this test.

Dr. Tirrito in Tucson AZ has opened the first EndoPAT clinic for diagnosing patients with endothelial dysfunction. Anyone in the area who would like to find out if they may be at risk for a heart attack or stroke can call Pima Heart at 520-321-4800. This 15 min, non-invasive study can improve the quality of your life, by reducing the risk of a cardiovascular event. People can find out 5-10 years before they would have a heart attack – in time to make the changes to prevent a debilitating heart attack or stroke. Call if you have a family history – the youngest person diagnosed in Tucson was 34 years old!
